Actually the term Byzantine Empire was only used by later historians to describe the Roman Empire during the middle ages.

The empire was not called that when it existed.

It was called the Roman Empire, the people were Romans and the emperors were called Roman Emperors. The Roman Empire did not fall until the fall of COnstantinople in may 1453.

@CocaPepsis Well, that's what they called themselves, Coca, but I disagree that they were actual Romans. Many people, such as contemporary Scandinavians, even refer to the medieval Eastern Roman Empire as Greece. I think it's more accurate to say that the people were themselves Greeks who followed Roman custom. It would be like saying Romans were Greek because much of their own culture took influence from the ancient Greeks. Just my two cents on your comment.

@CocaPepsis your first comment was totally (byzantine empire) true but your second comment is totally wrong. you proclaim that the ottomans were anti-christians who wanted to destroy christianity ?one of the reason why they wanted to get rome was because they declared themselves as new romans after getting constantinople, ottoman sultan started to be called "kayser-i rum". kayser means ceasar, rum means roman. ottoman ruling elite thought they were the roman empire.

Why did the Sultan want to get to Rome after Constantinople?Because of ambition? he could?the conducted a war of expansion why whouldn't he want more?they wanted to expand into Europe and destroy the heart of the Catholic church which was located in Rome,the Ottomans got as far as Vienna before they were stopped.

it wasn't a break away faction. in the 3rd century the empire was considered too large for the rule of only one man. So it was split into two, The Western Roman Empire (capital-Rome) and the Eastern Roman Empire (capital-Constantinople).The eastern part became much much more powerful and wealthy and lived on for almost 1000 years after the Western Empire fell.
