Found this awesome vintage console unit at a thrift store. I believe it's in a mahogany cabinet (?). The unit powers up, to a degree, but no sound or images on the tube. The unit has an unusual little round red light close to the base of the unit which illuminates when the unit it powered up. That, as well as some of the tubes lit up, as well as a very faint hum are the only indicators that it is getting some juice. I am in no way an authority on these old TV's, let alone troubleshooting or repairing them. I can hardly find any information out it on the net. A card inside the unit ID's it as a Stromberg- Carlson "17 RPM" "Kenwood" unit. If anyone else out there in Vintage TV-Land has any other information or knowledge of these sets, I'd welcome your input.

  • Given that it is a console model, but only has a 17'' picture tube, and has an inductuner (no detents between stations on the tuner) it's probably from the early 1950s. I would not power it up anymore before having the electronics overhauled, the power transformer or something else may go up in smoke.

  • @OlegKostoglatov- Indeed, I will likely just use it as a conversation piece. It looks stunning in its current state, even though it isn't really operational. From the research I've done, I agree that it dates from the early 50's, although I could not find the exact model in any line-up online. I did find similar models from the early 50's.

  • Stromberg Carlson tvs are wroth a lot of money these days

  • Hi! I do full professional restoration on these & actually have restored one similar to this, but it had a 19" round picture tube. If you are interested in having it restored to work like new with all it's original equipment intact, let me know. I have the service info on it & thousands of parts, tubes, etc. in stock to restore it for you. Send me a message if ur interested!

  • @CincinnatiGifts No reason why it couldn't be restored, at least the radio portion, there are a few old radio and T.V people in your area that could lend assistance.

  • Very nice find! I'd be careful not to plug it in and operate it anymore without some attention to the capacitors, at least. There's a great variety of things that can go wrong, but running a set with bad capacitors ruins them quickly. That's probably the hum you were hearing, a result of bad capacitors in the power supply and/or audio circuit. Stromberg-Carlson was a prominent brand and it may not be worth a fortune today but if properly restored, it would really be quite extraordinary.
