University of Georgia running back Herschel Walker announces his presence to the world on Sept. 6, 1980 as he absolutely demolishes and demoralizes All-SEC safety Bill Bates from Tennessee, and pretty much the rest of the Volunteer team. With UGA trailing 15-2 at halftime, Coach Vince Dooley inserted the true freshman Walker into the lineup for the first time and as they say, the rest is history! Dawgs upset the Vols in Knoxville, 16-15, and a Legend is born. Georgia went on to win the 1980 National Championship by beating Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. Walker won the Heisman Trophy his Junior year, 1982.

  • Did you see the TRUCK that ran you over.

Yes, it was a 1980, Hershel Walker.

  • And that right there folks,in my opinion,is the greatest college football running back of all time. Imagine how many career yards the guy would have had he come back for his senior yr.

  • What do you expect? He's Hershel Walker!

  • I miss Larry monson RIP

  • "My God a Freshman" classic Larry Munson, R.I.P.

  • Erm...the two guys just missed; the only special thing was that he defeated the first guy's tackle...

  • @SellTheBenefits very clever ^^

  • Bill Bates was a 24 year old senior and teaching classes at Tennessee when he got ran over by 19 year old Herschel Walker.

  • @NATERIDER122 I agree that Bates eventually BECAME an NFL quality safety.

I think we both agree that Herschel was and is a very special person and football player. As a Dallas Cowboy fan I would never cut him down. And the same for Bates. Bates was a Cowboy fan-favorite BECAUSE he beat the odds and became a Pro Bowler after going undrafted.

Hopefully we are both saying the same things but maybe in different ways. Merry Christmas,

  • @fgoodwin8578 NFL thought he didnt have the all out speed to be successful but it ended up they were wrong as I showed. I agree that Herschel's run stands on its own but it makes that much better that he ran over a NFL quality hard hitting safety.

  • @NATERIDER122 The OP said Bates was All SEC when Herschel ran over him. That is a false statement, as I showed. That takes nothing away from Herschel. Herschel's run speaks for itself -- he doesn't need people fluffing up Bates' reputation to make himself look better. If Bates was such a great college player, why wasn't he drafted?
