From her 1982 album The Dreaming

Lyrics:

("Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw!")

When you left, the door was
(slamming!)
You paused in the doorway
(slamming!)
As though a thought stole you away.
(slamming!)
I watched the world pull you away.
(Lock it!)

So I run into the hall,
(Lock it!)
Into the corridor.
(Lock it!)
There's a door in the house
(slamming).
I hear the lift descending.
(slamming!)
I hear it hit the landing,
(slamming!)
See the hackles on the cat
(standing).

With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it up).
With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it up).

I am the concierge chez-moi, honey.
Won't letcha in for love, nor money.
("Let me in!")
My home, my joy.
I'm barred and bolted and I
(Won't let you in).
(Get out of my house!)

No stranger's feet
Will enter me.
(Get out of my house!)
I wash the panes,
(Get out of my house!)
I clean the stains away.
(Get out of my house!)

This house is as old as I am.
(Slamming.)
This house knows all I have done.
(Slamming.)
They come with their weather hanging 'round them,
(Slamming.)
But can't knock my door down!
(Slamming.)

With my key I
(lock it).
With my key I
(lock it).

This house is full of m-m-my mess.
(Slamming.)
This house is full of m-m-mistakes.
(Slamming.)
This house is full of m-m-madness.
(Slamming.)
This house is full of, full of, full of fight!
(Slam it.)

With my keeper I
(clean up).
With my keeper I
(clean it all up).
With my keeper I
(clean up).
With my keeper I
(clean it all up).

I am the concierge chez-moi, honey.
Won't letcha in for love, nor money.
("It's cold out here!")
My home, my joy.
I'm barred and bolted and I
(Get out of my house!)
(Won't let you in).

(Get out of my house!)
No stranger's feet
(Get out of my house!)
Will enter me.
(Get out of my house!)
I wash the panes.
(Get out of my house!)
I clean the stains.
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
Won't enter me.
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
Yeah! Won't let you in!
(Get out of my house!)
(Get out of my house!)
"Let me in!

"Woman let me in!
Let me bring in the memories!
Woman let me in!
Let me bring in the Devil Dreams!"

I will not let you in!
Don't you bring back the reveries.
I turn into a bird,
Carry further than the word is heard.

"Woman let me in!
I turn into the wind.
I blow you a cold kiss,
Stronger than the song's hit."

I will not let you in.
I face towards the wind.
I change into the Mule.
"I change into the Mule."

Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw-hee-haw-hee-haw-hee-haw...

"Hee-haw! Hee-haw! Hee-haw!"

  • When I bought this album at the age of 14 back in 1983, I was shocked and appalled. This was not "my kind of Kate Bush"... but it quickly grew on me, and it's my all time favourite album. What a masterpiece... and... LISTEN TO HER VOICE! It always goes right into my blood! (love the 3:15 and onwards dialogue...)

  • My favourite track from the album.

The first time have listened to it in years.

Thanks for the great quality and for uploading this gem.

  • This, Pull Out The Pin and Leave It Open are three of the best songs i've ever heard in my entire life

  • "Get out of my house" @ 2:16 puts a shiver down my spine.

  • Rare? Single artist.....female....mid eighties progressive. That's uncommon. And she wasn't affecting anything. This wasn't a conscious attempt to be radical, progressive, or artsy in any way. She admits to a conscious stab at being more avant-garde than her previous lps in a bid to break her own mold, but that's a big difference from being weird-for-weird's sake. This album was the one that kinda freaked out Brits, and America liked it. Go figure.

  • HE HOOOOOOW HE HOOOOOOW HE HOOOOOOW

  • @westchile Agree partially, but it gets a bit inaccurate to say that THIS is what Björk is reaching for. Though this album is one of Björk's favourites, it is merely inspiration, as for many other artists (This record and Kate's career is really important for many musicians ;) IMO, Björk succeeds with her quirky sound, in her artistic way, then again, I love this album, too

  • it's moving, that final hee-haw its freezing. I don't know if i'm wrong or right but i've always listened to this song as a metaphor for a rape, or for a general situation of a forced relationship.

  • Almost 30 years later and this album still excites me. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

  • This its Bjork want to reach, i love her, but she even with her last album Biophilia cant get that sense of editorial album that she was looking for, and look at this, without super apps and stuff its beyond this universe, nobody can reach the craziness and "Alternativeness" of this gem of album.

  • Get out of my house!!!!

  • @curbish025 Oh I absolutely love this song. Its my favourite on Kates 'The Dreaming'. How could you call it dismal???
