Turns out both sides of this argument are right, and not in the lame way others are saying. Turns out the ORIGINAL printing of the album had Nazareth's intended spelling, "HEIR of the dog".
"THIS WAS THE TITLE THE BAND HAD INTENDED FOR THE ALBUM, BUT THE LABEL DID NOT APPROVE AND HAD THE NAMED CHANGED, ALTHOUGH NEARLY A THOUSAND COVERS WERE PRINTED."

Guys, don't want to be the smartass to break up all this retarded fighting about whether the word is Hair or Heir, but... Yes, the song name is Hair of the Dog, but it is not referring to the literal "Hair" of the dog, but it is a kind of play of words. It is spelt almost the exact same as "Heir" and that is what the true meaning of the words is, as a kind of joke. Hence half the songs lyrics being "Messing with a Son of a Bitch" So in a sense all of you are right -_- kthxbai

Hair of the dog does not refer to "heir" but to the hair of the dog that it you. It is getting your butt kicked and going back the next day to stand up to it.
