Generation X, a 10 song10 video project made with Scottish artists. Inviting Richard Jobson to take part was perhaps the boldest request as he had long ceased to be a singer and is making films these days. The approach we took in the studio was to slow the song down as we knew competing with a punk classic was always going to be a tall order. Gerry Campbell provided an acoustic guitar backing track and Richard sang his vocal. Towards the end of the session at Chem19 studios producer Brian Docherty suggested Richard record a spoken word version. This allowed the delicate vocals by Lisa McGregor and Maria Marshall (from Trinity High School) to come to the fore. The lyrical themes of friendship, war and loss have never been so poignant.
The girls were invited to perform alongside Richard and the remaining Skids members at the Tartan Clef Nordoff-Robbins Scottish Music Awards in 2008 where The Skids received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Richard also made a video using our recording as a backdrop to stills of soldiers killed in the Iraq War and has had just under 20,000 hits. David Griffin and participants at the Rutherglen Town Hall Summer School made the video at The Arches venue using stark lighting. The closed in nature of the venue added to the feeling of finality to the haunting arrangement. Supported by South Lanarkshire Council.
