@amaxamon The brilliance lies especially in the way the entire setting is built around their being marionettes. Gives fascinating angles on everything from the horrors of slavery (the way a slave's body can literally be used as "spare parts") to the ways that evil can use to skulk about (Grak's spider-like rappelling on his own strings).
Oddly, though Neso is obviously a stereotypical "evil vizier" type, I think the true "cliche" would be if Hal's revenge quest was played straight.
