The 2010 Monday Night Football schedule opened with a wet and rainy double header on September 13, 2010. Week one Monday Night Football kicked off with the Baltimore Ravens edging out the New York Jets 10 to nine and the Kansas City Chiefs upsetting the San Diego Chargers 21 to 14.

After a short rain delay, the New York Jets christened their new stadium but fans were silenced early as the team failed to execute on offense. Ray Lewis and the Ravens limited young quarterback Mark Sanchez and the Jets to just six first downs in the game, tying a franchise low set in 1976.

Jets' nose tackle Kris Jenkins left the game in the first quarter with a knee injury, the same knee that sidelined him for 10 games in 2009.

Despite early turnovers by the Ravens, New York tallied just three field goals in the game. The Jets gave the Ravens 125 yards in penalties alone, something New York head coach Rex Ryan described as "a joke."

In part two of the double header, a new-and-improved Kansas City Chiefs squad rallied to stun the San Diego Chargers. Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers gave San Diego the early lead with a touchdown pass to Antonio Gates, but Kansas City soon took over and carried their momentum to the win.

The Chiefs relied on strong play from their rushing unit, with Jamaal Charles tying the game at seven on a 56-yard touchdown run. Just a few possessions later, rookie receiver Dexter McCluster came up big on special teams when he set a franchise record with a 94-yard punt return for a touchdown to give Kansas City the 21 to seven lead going into halftime.

San Diego attempted a second-half comeback, scoring on a 59-yard pass to Legedu Naanee, but the Chiefs' defense held on late earn the victory.

Elated with the performance after finishing the 2009 campaign in last place in the AFC, Kansas City head coach Todd Haley remarked "This is a big win for us. But it can't be too big."
