25.8 million children and adults in the United States—8.3% of the population—have diabetes. (18.8 million people are diagnosed and 7.0 million are undiagnosed.) Another 80 million are at-risk of developing it. In addition to damaged lives, diabetes costs the U.S. over $200 billion in direct and indirect costs and leads to complications such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, blindness and kidney failure - all from a disease that can mostly be prevented or controlled through diet and exercise.
