the reason Japan ceased to exist was over a girlfriend, it had nothing to do with their music "lacking" in anyway. Their last album Tin Drum is often considered their best and they ended at a high point so what you wrote is absolutely nonsense. DD wished they could be Japan, they took their sound and made it more pop orientated. David Sylvian wanted to go his separate way at that point. DD were definitely fans of them, particularly Nick and John, and had asked them to produce their first album.
