Developed by a team of experienced modders from the Paradox forum, Darkest Hour is a stand-alone Hearts of Iron II game featuring a mixture of short and in-depth campaigns set across the darkest chapters of the 20th century, from the outbreak of the Great War up to the onset of the Cold War. Darkest Hour will introduce a new artificial intelligence that is now able to react to hundreds of different situations simultaneously, along with a dynamic diplomatic system that will allow the player to have a real impact on the course of history.

About Europa Engine projects
Europa Engine projects are independently developed games using Paradox Interactive's proprietary Europa Engine, giving small development teams access to one of the best and most powerful Strategy game engines in the industry. The Europa Engine powered such internally developed titles as Europa Universalis, Europa Universalis II, Victoria I, Hearts of Iron and Hearts of Iron II, with the first independently developed external projects being For The Glory and Arsenal of Democracy. Forthcoming Europa Engine projects include Iron Cross and Darkest Hour.

  • Looks like this is combining the best of the HoI series plus EU.

  • @ss11955 This game will give you strategic immersion, isnt that a good alternative to your tactical immersion?

Also the total war games need ALOT of power to run them, unlike the HoI series.

  • @xn117 yes there is. The tutorial has the full mod. The light mod and vanilla are basically hoi2.

  • @oddersisadog It really is great. Personally, I still suck at Darkest Hour since I am use to Hearts of Iron 2 (with mods). I wish they had better tutorials, both in-game and here on youtube. Either way, the way I became decent in HOI2 is just trial and error. Play as Germany to learn most of the military aspects. The US, so you can sit back and just worry about learning how to run a economy. Sooner or later you should become decent.

  • Strong Learning curve if you ask me.

All I need is a good tutorial. Everyone that I find is just bs on top of bs until finally they have basically told me nothing useful.

I can dream can't I? Game looks great though.

  • I have a speed issue, the game seems to slow down over time. When I get into the year 1944 it almost stops. Even when I put it on maximum speed. Is there a fix for this?

  • I got a issue, whenever i run darkest hour it just says "Stops responding" and throws me back to the desktop.

Do i also need HoI2 or is this more of a... stand alone?

  • This game is the best HoI in my opinion =D

  • @mini1gerbel Mainly the map (which is incredibly awesome; this cannot be overstated) and gameplay speed (no longer lags in the later years). The decisions system is decent, the new tech tree is good, and it includes a WW1 scenario (although interwar years need to be improved dramatically). Oh, and the automated industry works beautifully (no more fiddling with IC sliders).

Overall, there is almost no reason to get the original Hearts of Iron 2 over Darkest Hour.

  • whats really different from this and arsenal of democracy?

  • @roguegoliath74 Darkest Hour is based on hearts of iron (hoi) 2 but with lots of incremental improvements. The gameplay is polished and pretty much everything works as it's supposed to.

Hoi 3 changed a lot compared to hoi 2, but unfortunately it launched in a very crappy state. 2 expansions later it's beginning to come together, but it still has some flaws in the gameplay. But in some areas it is more modern than hoi 2 and darkest hour.

I still enjoy darkest hour more than hoi 3 though.
