Honduran archeologists say to have found the remains of a Mayan King. The skeleton was discovered in the Temple Oropendola in the Mayan ceremonial centre of Acropolis in Copan, western Honduras. [Ricardo Agurcia, Anthropologist]: "It's a funeral chamber that is located in the center of the Oropendola building which we found a couple of years ago. We have been involved in a very careful excavation and investigation process which brings us to the conclusion that we are dealing with one of the first kings from the Copan dynasty." Copan is well-known for its grand Mayan monuments and hieroglyphics and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

[Ricardo Agurcia, Anthropologist]: "A funeral chamber such as this is like a window to the past because it is a capsule in time in which they deposited these important objects for the life of the king and which tell us about the king, his relationship with powers of the ancient world." The pre-Colombian Mayan civilization thrived in what is now Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, southern Mexico and Belize until it disappeared mysteriously around 1000 AD.
