If you're looking to fully complete the game, that ball roll move is actually essential. Those Master Thief Sprints are a lot more annoying than, say, the racing missions in this game. Some of them can barely be completed even with using the ball move through the entire level. I'm not sure if you have to do them to get 100% or not, though, they're more-or-less to unlock level commentaries.
