In 2010/11, Deaf Children Australia trialled a new service for deaf youth, helping them to connect with a local sporting club or activity in their community.

The Recreation Respite Support Program paired deaf youth aged 9--18, with an Auslan-fluent respite worker who accompanied them to an activity of their choice. The role of the respite workers was is to help facilitate communication between the deaf youth and the activity leader, as well as the other activity participants. They also provided training to the leaders, such as deafness awareness training, basic Auslan and fingerspelling and visual presentation techniques.
