The "called shot" story is malarkey! Charlie Root would have thrown at Ruth's head if Ruth had pointed to the center field fence as the legend goes. Root was that kid of a pitcher. Furthermore, the next day's newspapers made virtually no mention of the called shot. Had it really happened, it would have been banner news.

poor charlie root. ruth never called it, but he sure hit it. ruth and gehrig both hit two that day and the yankees swept the cubs 4-0.
