Smiley of Des Moines Iowa

Every cool city has a popular nonconformist. They become icons -- showing the rest of us what our city would look like if it were embodied in flesh and blood. Smiley represents the best quality of Des Moines: its friendly people. And who is friendlier than Smiley? Four or five years ago, my friends and I saw Smiley on our way home from a night of fun in downtown Des Moines. The week prior, I had been looking for Smiley so I could write a story about him for the local alt-weekly. On this night, I happened to have my camcorder on me so we stopped to do a short interview. My friend Shannon and I are talking to him while Mike films (and makes occasional commentary). Enjoy!
