In this video I demonstrate how to configure Samba 3.5.6 to become a PCD (Primary Domain Controller). I first edit the smb.conf file and make a few changes. Lucky, most of the code needed is already in the conf file, it just needs to be un-commented. After I tweak the smb configuration file I create the necessary groups and users for the PDC to function correctly. From there I boot up a generic Windows XP VirtualMachine and login to the newly created domain. Finally I demonstrate the benefits of a PDC and talk about why you might want to create a PDC in your small business or home.

*Update: Here is a link to my smb.conf file per request: http://goo.gl/QVNB

  • @Gabbsmo nope, haven't got it working jet...

  • @hydrox24 or even better sudo -s

  • Does this work with Windows 7?

  • Hey can you put the config file up again if you still have it, no worries if you don't.

  • just a suggestion that people use sudo su or sudo bash so that ther aren't using the outdated sh shell.

  • Hi nice tutorial. I used it for the start to get things up and running and later add more shares to the smb.conf. This is just what I need to start my journey into SAMBA as PDC...many thanks...
