The two teams met in the first round of the tournament and the game ended 1-1. Italy missed reaching the second round after their 1-2 defeat to Poland in their last game. The weak points for Italy in the 1974 competition were the aging and lack of freshness and inspiration of their forward stars Rivera and Riva. A. Mazzola was a bit more inspired, but, as can be seen in the highlights of this Argentina game, it was the entrance of Franco Causio in the second half that gave life to the Italian forward moves. With the two senators Zoff and Fachetti securing the defense, the best players in the team seemed to be the hard working midfield duo of Romeo Benetti and Fabio Capello, famously the England manager for the 2010 World Cup.
For Argentina, Kempes was discovering the World Cup stage, preparing for his 1978 triumph.
