The Festival of Partnerships for Students which celebrates the many talents of students, staff and partners is now underway.
Festival events will run from Monday 24 November, until Friday 6 February 2009, and embrace a wide range of activities.
These will be as diverse as taking part in this year's world record attempt, camping out 'Under the Stars' at a mini-music festival in the library, going beyond boundaries and comfort zones with the Carnegie inter-campus challenges, Malham Expedition and charity abseil, rubbing shoulders with and being coached by champions of brass bands and ballet or simply having fun at one of the many fringe or music events.
The festival was launched on Monday 24 November with an event at The Library, when the University presented a live 'radio broadcast' of three fireside tales.
'Down the Line' links the final moments of a First World War soldier to the experience of his wife at home. 'Krystalnacht' follows the hiding of a child's book in the past only to witness its re-emergence in an alternative future, and finally 'The Rocking Horse' is a traditional haunting ghost story.
BA Hons Art, Event, Performance level one students have been working to create narrative scores from scratch including sound effects and theme music for the performance in the Acre Room.
In the opening week, the University celebrated Thanksgiving, the annual American festival, by holding a number of events including an Eve-of-Thanksgiving Party & Rugby Extravaganza, a colloquium which asked 'What does the American election mean for the rest of the world?' and a basketball exhibit featuring a 'Slam-Dunk' contest.
The first Monday saw the link of the Transitions and Partnerships Festival, organised by the Assement Teaching & Learning faculty. The event embraces a range of events taking place over the week and focuses on students' transition to university life.
Also, included in the events was Leeds Met's unique Library Festival from 24 to 28 November, a week of events and activities which gave students the opportunity to see the Library in new ways, and a reminder of the value of libraries to learning, leisure and working lives.
During the first week, students, staff and partners celebrated the birth date of Andrew Carnegie, the great philanthropist who founded free Carnegie libraries around the world. Students and staff joined together at
Leeds Met to visit the variety of libraries in Leeds, to view their collections and to watch a showing of Terry Gilliam's film "Brazil". The Library's own treasure quest with great prizes, and reflections from members of the Leeds Met community on what libraries mean to them was also on offer.
