Maunsell Forts in the Thames Estuary. Built as wartime defences, they were later used by pirate radio stations.

If you didn't know better you would think they came straight out of a "MYST" computergame.

Now I know where Spielberg got a lot of the imagery for those alien-robotic/war/shooting- machine looking things.

I am 49 and always viewed these from Leysdown as a child. Now my close up view curiosity has opened up my eyes.

The threat was not from ships but from aircraft. They were such a difficult target that not one was ever hit. As you say, it would not have been a pleasant experience coming under fire.
