is it just me or does this firewall require admin pass at boot up? and if so how do you automated it?

It shouldn't require admin pass at boot up. it only requires your pass when you want to change the settings.

when you install gufw it is under System>Administration as Firewall Configuration

Yes, but it doesn't have a GUI. I think gufw will appeal to more users as most of us don't want to edit text files or use the terminal to open or close ports.
