tokyo neighborhood thick with bars

my bike ride through golden gai, one of the oldest areas in tokyo. at least 50 bars, most with no more than 5 seats. Built just after WWII this area would have been (over) developed just like the rest of shinjuku, but a grassroots movement in the 70's protected it. I suppose now its likely to get destroyed when THE BIG ONE hits tokyo, but until then its a quiet out of the way place that you can go to to get a taste of old tokyo. the path leading to it used to be a train line that led to shinjuku station.

The big park in Ueno has some really nice hidden spots. I just got back from a two week trip and the Golden Gai was my favorite part of all of Tokyo. Tokyo is so bright and interesting, but after a while it can all sort of blend into dense sameness. The Golden Gai around 5 or 6 pm before everyone shows up while all the owners are getting ready is magical. It's so quiet, and there's something completely different and beautifully designed every 4 feet. No image does it justice.
