Students at the University of Alaska Anchorage videotaped a male Alaska blackfish (Dallia pectoralis) cannnibalizing another blackfish. These small freshwater fish are native to western Alaska but have been introduced to lakes in the Anchorage area. Students are studying their diet and timing of reproduction to determine what effects non-native blackfish may have on natural aquatic ecosystems.

  • this is an example why they are illegal in anchorage lakes because they eat the salmon fry along with native fish.i just caught a two inch fry of a blackfish and it was introduced by a man who fished the lake for 25 years and he relesed 88 breeder adults. this was only 30 mins. ago.

Wow, that’s incredible. Thanks for sharing that. Which Anchorage lake was it? The blackfish in our video are from Palmer area (Rabbit Slough and nearby pond). Introduced fish can cause a lot of problems for the native ones already there!

  • Hi Keemosabbi,

Alaska blackfish were introduced to Lake Hood in Anchorage in the mid 1950s. Pretty cool to hear your grandparents caught them since then! No, these fish are well fed. This is an aggressive male that attacked another blackfish--they get really aggressive, especially during meal time. Thanks for your comments!

  • @deidam1 reflection lake. its a neighborhood lake.

  • When was this fish introduced to the anchorage area? Must have been years ago my grandparents remember catching them here since the 50s. Heck no one will probably read this- it is my opinion that these fish are starving? (the ones in your video) Well may you get a grant for your study.
