Well the American Media and the two parties are more to blame here. He was kicked out of the debates and he recieved hardly any media coverage.

Unfortunately major media outlets and the DNC didn't like him so he did not get much media coverage and was forced to drop out of the debates rather early. Not enough democrats knew about him to vote for him. This happens all the time. In Russia, Putin's allies controlled many media outlets. He was never criticized, and his handpicked successor was given more air time than his opponents. Not surprisingly Medvedev won the election.
