"The brilliant unabridged narration brings out all the ironies, tragedy and exuberant comedy of this 18th-century classic" - Rachael Redford, The Observer

CANDIDE (Unabridged) (4 CDs) by Voltaire read by Andrew Sachs

This frankly hilarious as well as philosophical story follows Candide and his tutor Pangloss, as they journey the earth following the mantra: 'All is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds'.

This adage, however, is disproved at many turns, with the characters encountering many forms of opposition to their outlook. Candide realises some of the horrors the eighteenth-century world contains, not without moments of sublime comedy, but is there any light at the end of the tunnel for the travelers?

Francois-Marie Arouet (1694-1778), known better by his pen-name Voltaire, was hailed as a genius of the 'Enlightenment', a philosophical and political movement which championed logical reasoning above all else.

  • I am not sure I am willing to subscribe to the notion that "plump" is desirable these days.

  • I dont like this mans voice. Sounds like professor katz from futurama

  • 'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.' (Romans 8:28)

'For those God foreknew he also predestined to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn of many brothers'. (Romans8:29)

  • "And Candide spoke to her without knowing what he said."

    Brilliant.

  • @resendess With Voltaire I think it might depend on which you read first, I read Candide first and compared it to everthing else I read of his work and all the while thought "it's good but it's not Candide".

  • very funny book

  • It can also be said that without homininae there'd be no" whites, no orientals, no hispanics, and no middle easterners" and no negroes either.

Are we not more progressed than homininae?(the common ancestor between apes and humans),if so your point is rendered null by extension of logic.

No harsh feelings on my part.

  • without negroes there would be no whites, no orientals, no hispanics, and no middle easterners. africa is the mother land of the human species.

  • no....bob's first period is the best
