Well, I'm no expert, and I'm not a fan of any particular martial art - but aren't the Japanese police forces using aikido do deal with people on the streets ? If so, then it has to work - other wise they wouldn't use it.

yeaaah! maybe i should not use the word shit - and not do that about anybody. And for sure, i can see that watanabe sensei when he grabs uke hands sometimes are doing sone very good and realistic technics. But i do just simply not belive, that he is having supernatural powers, and that he just by wawing his hands in front of uke can make him falll and make forward ukemi and all kind of stuff like this. And you will not make me belive in that. I have seen a lot like this before.

@mickparly ''it brings aikido bad reputation''..man..you really dont mean that.take time to think a little bit,watanabe sensei has a great history,he is 80 years old still teaching aikido.everything he does with his uke would be called shit only by an ignorant.ancient moves of field samurai fighting are hidden in everything he does.the fact that you just dont see it doesnt make it untrue.aikido is an art that needs many years to digest.be patient,practice...try more.

Best is to visit a workship given by Nobuyuki Watanabe and try it out. I attended in 1986 for the first time his class at Hombu Dojo and, yes, I didn't believe what I saw. But I can tell you it works and it is real. It is no miracle but down to earth techniques. Yes, I agree, some uke exaggerate it but this is real fun to try to attack Watanabe sensei without hesitation. And, yes, you all can learn this too. No magic inside.
