On Saturday, April 18th 2009, over 140 participants returned almost 500 pounds of unwanted medicines at the Return Unwanted Medicines event sponsored by New York Sea Grant, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Medical Center, Suffolk County Legislator Lynne Nowick, Suffolk County Health Department, Suffolk County Police Department Narcotics Unit, and Triumvirate Environmental Inc. Stony Brook University School of Journalism student Micheline Maroni reported on the event, from which a number of related resources were generated, including a comprehensive "how-to" guide on holding a successful take-back event of your own without outside funding.

"At the end of the day, according to Stony Brook University Hospitals Director of Pharmacy Jeannene Strianse, approximately 88,000 pills had been collected as well as nearly 4 liters of liquids and 8 kilograms of powder.
