Great video, and very informative. (Better your blade than mine! Hahahaaa!) Thanks for testing and the demo. That really answered some questions. Later, brother. ~Wolf

interesting. I've snapped tips doing the same test. infact I dont think its a valuable test because I can just about snap any tip off any knife that isn't tipped like a crow bar. having 1/8" of tip in hardwood like you did, is the same as putting 1/8" into a vice.. it will snap easily because of the sheer amount of leverage you have on it. I agree that the fact that it bend shows either toughness, or a soft heat-treat. (what RC test did it hit?) but it was too stressed to push back. Good Video

I agree totally. It was extreme, I got carried away. I have no idea what it would rc at. I don't have a tester. Rc doesn't mean a whole lot to me honestly, I aim for a spot and then test it. If it passes good, if not then I adjust. Not exact science but it works pretty good.
Thanks, bro.

What do you think is the best steel for a knife like that for someone with a smaller budget?

I don't think you can go wrong with properly heat treated o-1, personally. Properly heat treated to what you want to do with the knife of course.
