To harvest asparagus, allow it to grow for three years, look for thick, lush asparagus stems, and cut the plant back to the ground during the harvest. Find out how asparagus can be harvested for up to 20 years if the plants are left alone for the first three years with information from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening.

Wait for about two years -- the ones at WalMart or Lowes or Home Depot are probably about one year old as they stand.

Hi. My name is Joe. I have a question. I just bought the Asparagus at the Wal-mart. and it came with 10 crowns that has around 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch in diameter. and they are starting to grow already. and those are around 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch in diameter. Should I wait for 3 years to harvest? or should I start harvest now? It's been a 2 weeks that I planted in my garden. and if it is O.K. to start harvest should I keep on cut them till winter? or harvest only so much and let it grow?
