@pudgeuncle It seems bizarre to leave multiple comments on different videos of Bernadette in this show, just to get across how much you disliked her.

Why not just comment on videos of performers you like?

I wouldn't say she sucked at all. Bernadette's take on this part is just a lot less traditional: Where there was once Ethel Merman's brassy belt for the role, we now have a more human, vulnerable view on Mama Rose that fits the character better.

The problem with Peters is that she's softened the character too much. Rose is hard-edged, egotistical, and a bull in a china closet.

@pudgeuncle Nagh .. Babs looks incredible; easily 20 yrs. younger than her linear years. I'm not a huge Tom Hanks fan, but then again, other than seeing the original movie with Rosalind Russell I don't really know GYPSY. I would have preferred Barbra do a Sunset Blvd. remake, based more on the movie, but integrating the music from the play with Tom Cruise as the cocky "Joe".

@boynamedalexxx She was in peak health when I saw her and was God awful. As is often the case, the immensely talented Ms. Peters plays a role she is not suited for.

@mikesterSTLMO Barbra is a bit too old but somehow she will make that work. She is to smart to not have a solution. And if Tom Hanks is cast as Herbie, this moment will be heartbreaking. At least Barbra has the consolation, as does any future Rose, that they could not be as awful as Peters. Worst Broadway performance I have seen in over 40 years.

In case anyone hasn't heard, Barbra Streisand is in talks to star in the new version of Gypsy!, playing Mama Rose of course. Can't wait to see her show all these broads the way its done!

@boynamedalexxx Despite what some people think, it's true that Bernadette was extremely sick with a viral infection in the beginning of the run...when she returned to health, her voice was incredible and strong as ever...after all, she did the show for over a year.

@Selendomono Bernadette doesn't have a 'tiny little voice.' She's been singing and acting professionally since she was 3 years old...she's headlined shows like "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Sunday in the Park with George" that had much bigger, more complex songs.

This is okay. I also LOVE the ethel merman version. Lucky... I have the CD!
