My cover version of the Great Lake Swimmer's remarkable song "Moving Pictures Silent Films". My undying thanks to Paul Sonnenberg for his patience and encouragement and indispensible help in producing and engineering this video.

Moving Pictures Silent Films
(Great Lake Swimmers)

Oh wake me please when this is over
Oh when the ice is melted away
And the hunger returns
I will be same but older
And maybe be twice the bear that I thought I was

Where have you been?
And what have you done?

I've been under the ground
Eating prayers from this old book I found
Under the ground
Saving it up
And spending it all
On moving pictures
Silent films
Moving pictures
Silent films

Oh is this the dream I've been saving?
Oh where the heart beats slower and slower
To almost nothing
Almost nothing
Almost nothing

I took it for love
Or at least something beautiful
Out there in the spotlight
But turned around suddenly
Turned around squinting

And saw there ahead was headlights
And then the truth
The truth was unbearable
Oh and imminent
Bearing down on these two shadowed animals

Caught painting a dotted line
Caught painting a dotted line
Caught painting a dotted line

Where have you been?
And what have you done?

I've been under the ground
Eating prayers from this old book I found
Under the ground
Saving it up
And spending it all
On moving pictures
Silent films
Moving pictures
Silent films

  • great cover. did you figure out the chords yourself?

  • Oh, hi! Thanks alot! Yeah, I figured out these chords. I know it's not the way he plays it, though - I've seen him live and he uses a lot of bar chords and stuff that I don't know that well. :o

  • tony dekker is a close friend of mine. this is great to see.

much respect to you, tom and tony!

  • Way cool! Thanks! I met Tony briefly after a show here (Chicago) once. A fine gentleman, he. He was very gracious and signed a CD for me. I think he's returning for another show - I must get tix! His songwriting is so compelling!

  • Great job, man. Awesome voice. They're on tour again - gonna see them in Hamilton, ON this month and Toronto next month.

  • Ooh! They're touring?!?! Yay!

    *checks dates*

    No Chicago date. :(

    *cries*

Anyhow I saw them once here. And chatted with Tony after their performance. Very sweet guy. I told him I played MPSF and that I enjoyed inhabiting his song. He smiled. :D

  • Something you couldn't achieve.

  • Hopefully it killed you.

  • Amazing stuff. You'd think a voice like yours couldn't live up to Dekker's, boy was I wrong.

You manage to give the song a more mature feeling.

  • This made me ill.

  • what the fuck is this

  • tony dekker is a close friend of mine and this is fantastic to see.

much respect to both you, tom and tony!
