The government has been sued at the East African court of justice over the torture of 3,000 people in Mount Elgon. The torture victims, through the independent medical legal unit, are accusing the government of failing to investigate claims of torture and cruelty as well as refusing to compensate both the victims as well as the families of the over 600 people allegedly killed by the military during the 'okoa maisha' military operation in the region in 2008.
