  • Would that job not have been 100 times easier on a lathe??Rather than using a roatating vice mounted at 90 deg?

  • What if you don't have a Lathe to use that would work. Mine is a 5c collet, harding tool room lathe. I machine small things 1" dia and under most of the time. This is out of my style.

  • would you be able to make that on a lathe?

  • yes and with a simple ball jig on tool post with a hss bit, you have many more radius choices. That said i am wanting to make the same thing, but my lathe only swings 9in, and i want a 25in former die. So this is the way i will be making my die.

  • wow, respect! That is a great job, I'm surprised you could even pull that off. How did the die turn out in the end?

  • respect, with limited machines and things are still made makes a very good machinist. you should have a hefty arm turning that table many times toget that job done

  • how would you turn a die like this with a perfect radius on a lathe? it would take for ever and wouldnt be as smooth probably.....trying to turn in a little then move over a hair and then in a little more ect. =a very long time

  • Good point!Didn't think of that,I just assumed that if you had a large mill that you also had a large lathe,as the two usually go hand in hand. All my machines and tooling are designed for nothing bigger than 30mm dia,I make model locomotives in G scale you see, stew.
