Chapter 2
Not all things beautiful are necessarily good.
Joe, I cant bare to tell him. Sage mumbled, fidgeting on his bed. She loved Nick, it was apparent but this secret was too big even for her to cover up. From the moment she met Nick she was taken away by his charm and romantically sweet antics, but when she met Joe it was something shed never dealt with. Something new and something that never went away.
Joe sighed before sitting down next to her. Me too, me too. He stared out his frost covered window, shutting his eyes. Sages warm body leaning against his put his mind at ease, too bad that cure was only temporary. Well talk to him tonight. He announced decidedly, he knew very well tonight would change everything is this house and most definitely not for the better.
LUCY? Nick called out, standing by the front door. Are you coming over for dinner? His stomach gurgled loudly as if to back up his point of wanting to get over to dinner that instant. The faint response from her room confirming that she was coming caused Nick to let out a groan. Hurry, Im hungry! He grumbled before pulling open the front door to look out the screen door. The wind was whipping the fresh snow around the yard with a vengeance. Upon hearing Lucys footsteps behind him, he applied pressure to the door and stepped out into the mini-blizzard.
Shivering, they both ran across the yard and back into the house. Once in the safety of the warm house they both brushed the snow and stomped their feet, decreasing the chance of tracking it through the house.
Dinner was awkward to say the least, the clinking of silverware and the occasional asking for someone to pass something was all that was heard. Everyone seemed to be shrouded in their own thoughts. It was Nick who finally spoke up when they were all lounging in the living room afterwards. Why is everyone acting like a bunch of freaks? He asked his tone thick with the exasperation he was feeling. Between Lucys silence and Sages jumpy behavior and to top it off Joe did not make a single joke at the table. Something was seriously wrong, or rather off.
Tired, it was a long flight. Lucy quickly replied before excusing herself back to the pool house. Joe waited until he heard the door shut before speaking. Nick, we have to talk. Nick rolled his eyes but before they were able to make their full trip Joe interrupted him again. I mean it Nick, this is serious.
His brothers tone brought concern into Nicks heart which seemed to have picked up pace at his words. What are you even talking about?
Nick Sage started gently, her eyes remained on the floor. Im pregnant. The room was dead silent, not even the clock dared to make a familiar tick sound. Nick inhaled sharply and swallowed hard. He could feel his heart trapped in his throat. How could this happen? One time and that was months ago. Nick glared at her, accusation in his eyes. They no longer flickered happily but harsh and cold, full of hurt and realization of being deceived.
Nick, Im so sorry. Sage kept her eyes fixed on the ground, the guilt and embarrassment made it nearly impossible to even rest her gaze upon his body, let alone his face. I never meant-
Nick broke in, cutting her apology short. Why did he care about what she had to say? The words meant nothing to him to begin with. Its not mine, is it? His tone lacked the emotion that would have eased the tension, so did his face. Blank, dead, and cold. Sage, whose is it?
Sage shot Joe a pained look before speaking. Joes. Nick narrowed his eyes, willing his temper to remain in tact as Joe stepped closer to him. One step, two steps, three. Nick pulled his fist back landing his fist into his brothers jaw. Joe stumbled backwards, Sage gripped his dizzied form. An astonished look was painted on both of their faces along with a mixture of pain.
You always had to take everything, Joe. Nick shocked angrily. You always took it away from me, everything I loved. I cant believe this; if you loved each other why keep playing me?
Sage cradled Joes swelling face in her lap as tears welled up in her big eyes. Nick, Im sorry. Joe pleaded his tone full of desperation and frustration.
Save it. Nick snapped, crashing through the house and back out the door. The icy wind spitting cold snow flurried against his hot face. Fighting his first reaction to run out into the storm he instead turned, storming into the pool house. The strained cries of Joe and Sage caused him to lock the door tightly. A disoriented Lucy appeared by the door. Are you okay? She asked groggily, her hair piled into a messy bun on the top of her head.
Nick glanced over at her, fighting back tears. Yeah, Luc, just go back to sleep. He waved her off, dropping onto the couch. He ran his fingers through his hair trying to make sense of everything. He felt her weight on the couch. Lucy, Im fine.
She nodded though he couldnt see her. She let her eyes close as a soft sign escaped her lips. "Nick.." She began gently.
