The only time I've seen good upcscaling is on the Farscape Blu-rays. They lost the 35mm negs, so used the best source they had - PAL master videotapes (576i). They used professional upscaling algorithms and various digital trickery to obtain the 1080p transfer. Knowing the source and being familiar with PAL, it is impressive. Even still, you KNOW you're watching upscaled video. You actually do see more detail, but it's only showing details that were already hidden there, but in a better light.

Nonsense. Not even full HD 1080p sets have the mainstream yet... many still have 'HD Ready' 720p (rather 768p) sets and a heck of a lot are still clinging onto CRT SD sets for dear life. Even IF 2k and 4k tech gains popularity, that won't mean a new HD format or HD channels upping their broadcast resolution any time soon. Some still broadcast at 1080i, and many upscale SD. Blu-ray (and DVD for that matter) will be the de facto standard formats for years and years.

It might not be WORTH getting angry about, but it is understandable when the five thousandth idiot comes along and tries to say "DVD looks just as good as blu-ray". Take a look at this guy's video 'Blu-ray vs DVD the ultimate 1080p comparison'. Set this to full screen and a minimum of 720p and watch the entire video. It's not just slightly better, it is leagues ahead. Watch a blurry mess in the background turn into a face, watch illegible scribble turn into writing etc.

Hey dude I'm finally getting a HD tv in my room for my birthday which meens I can use Blu- ray, is it really worth it? please reply thanks.
The difference is so minimal that's why people don't notice. vhs to dvd that was a leap. dvd to blu-ray was a hop. dvd was better quality, easier to handle, smaller, more extras. thats what made vhs to dvd a huge leap. blu-ray, its all about being a little sharper. Same shape and size as dvd, same extras sometimes less. More expensive. Blu-ray doesn't exist because people embraced it, it exists because it was shoved down our throats.

@MuttonAndTheHam Wrong. DVD was roughly 4X the resolution of VHS. Blu-ray is 6X the resolution of DVD. The difference only seems "minimal" if you're watching on a tiny screen. The actual difference is far from "minimal." Watch a Blu-ray on a 70" screen and you see far more detail than a 40" screen. Watch a DVD on a 70" screen and all you see is more pixelization. Blu-ray now often has more extras than DVD. Price is typically 2-3 dollars more, if that. Not unreasonable AT ALL.

@RSNCICREO Better color, cleaner, crisper lines, and if it uses painted backgrounds they look amazing. I have quite a lot of animation on Blu-ray and it looks vastly superior to the DVD versions.

@RSNCICREO Coincidentally, I'm actually watching Justice League (the animated series) on Blu-ray as I type this. And I can say without any fear of contradiction that it looks FANTASTIC. :) The DC/Marvel animated movies look great too.
