Here's Warburton. Just being a blind kitty who acts just like every other kitty. Save for a few precious things.

Like this. Since we brought Warburton home from the Humane Society, he's not only astounded us with his ability to play with little cloth mice toys and navigate the house in a way that would make even Magellan (or Teiresias?) feel proud; he's also developed this penchant for hopping over the spot where the bathroom tiles rise up into the hardwood floor.

Often he'll feel with his paw and explore for a while as though it's deadly lava, then, once he's got the contours, he'll do his mighty Olympic jump. I also started off with his general cat cuteness and dawdling and, more importantly, his balance beam act on the godawful pink bathtub (note also the craptastic pink toilet with holy tortoiseshell plastic seat).

A bit more on Warburton's history.

When Warburton was found near Colonial Avenue in Staten Island in 11/06, he wouldn't let anyone touch him or his eyes. He was afflicted with a terribly painful eyelid condition--entropion--and had to be sedated by an animal shelter who operated on him and cleaned him up. After nearly two years in a cage, he was a bit persnickety-- it must have been hard only being able to swat in the air and groan when other sassy-assed adolescent cats whacked the crap out him and ran off through the shelter cat room like hyperactive nutbags.

Now he's a cuddly fuzzy ball of love. He's a SuperCat. You only get like 4 of these cats in a lifetime. He's as affectionate as can be.

  • Hey blind kitty owners, do you have any advice for new blind kitty owners (such as myself?). Jed-eye is 3 months old, and we fell in love (we had gone to the shelter to get a dog and came home with her). She started this new thing yesterday where she'd get spooked by the air, and walk in a perfect "rewind" motion. Nothing could stop her. What on earth? Thanks in advance! PS-love your cat!

  • Hmm weird. "Spooked by the air"? Could it be odor? Sound? Wind/temp currents? or just plain freak out? Warburton has his freak outs every so often. He'll meow and run all over. I just think he's venting excess energy. We haven't always got time to take him out on a leash (which, by the way, actually works with Warburton because he's blind, and he can't really bolt and run...he doesn't know where he's going! He'll just sniff and explore in the park.)

  • Yes blueciel it's been a real eye opener. Amazingly, warburton does well on a leash as well, as his blindness prevents him from bolting! Warburton has an amazing 3D conception of our aptmt, and plays soccer on our hardwood floors w wadded up brown paper...simply amazing. We're debating abt getting him a companion tho bc he seems a little listless..but hemay actually be a solitary kitty...we're still deciding.

  • no worries, usually we have it down :)

he's so smart though...wonder if he could get stuck!

  • That's interesting, I wonder why Warburton got into the habit of doing the big jump? My cat is blind and she's a doll. I think blind cats make for better pets. My blind kitty plays fetch and all kinds of other games none of the my other seeing cats ever did. She does have to be watched over more and we don't move around the furniture... but she's indeed worth it. Thanks for being a loving owner of a blind cat too. =)

  • Thank you for adopting him and sharing his story with us here. He is just precious and I am thankful that he is loved.

  • Warburton ROCKS!!! What an amazing story and what an AMAZING shelter to do all of that medical work and to care so well for him all this time!!! He looks GREAT and SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO CUTE!!! What a FANTASTIC Olympic jumper! Also, you have a lovely clean bathroom (I like the tree just outside the door too)... could you put the seat down on the toilette so he doesn't fall in? :-)
