Dessa - A Badly Broken Code (2010)
The first official full-length album emphasizes Dessa's wingspan as a singer and rapper, ranging from melancholy a cappella arrangements to vintage torch songs to infectious rap cuts.A Badly Broken Code is a somber emotional catharsis, which gives equal stage time to Dessa the forlorn R&B vocalist as it does Dessa the indie rapper. No matter what the style, each track touches on some piece of the singers inner-psyche. The aforementioned Childrens work reflects on the artists childhood and relationship to her brother, while Mineshaft II is a lesson in failed relationships. After hearing Dessas recent track on False Hopes IV Scuffle I was hoping that she would take the aggression a bit further, but other than in Bullpen most of the rhymes arent that strong-chinned. There is quite a bit of beauty in the melancholia though especially in R&B ballad the Chaconne, which features fantastic backup vocals by Matthew Santos, sounding not a little like Antony Hegarty. Matches to Paper Dolls too has some of Dessas best lyricism to sultry strings, as does Into the Spin, in which the masterful violin of Jessy Green (Foo Fighters) comes into play.

Lyrics:
That old crow came back today
Sitting in my window like a prophet
Out on the fire escape, to say
Anger is just love, left out, gone to vinegar
You wake up a stranger to yourself then you
Learn to live with her
Sit in her clothing 'til you fill out her figure
You know life's no bella telanovela
The tightrope bows with your weight in the center
The slide show don't put all the pictures together
You try to do it right though
Right though, until you let the kite go
Death and romance, the riddles of our lifetimes
Tryna get a slow dance, middle of a knife fight
You get up and you, you give blood
Even on a good night even on a good night out
You send signal, you listen for an echo
At the first splinters you run to tell Geppetto
And in the worst winters the whole thing feels untenable
Crow took me by the shoulder
And he told me honey, don't let go

Nobody fears the height, you all just fear the fall
Go to the edge sometime
And prove your body wrong
You land badly, but you crash standing
You land badly, but you crash

He took me to the workshop
Showed me where the built the bodies
A blacksmith, a mason, a carpenter
And in the darkroom, where the whole assembly started
All the clothesline where the hearts hung to harden
You come as fragile, soft machines
And you're bound to fast, you're bound to grieve
But you're built to balance on two feet
So why you living this last year from your knees

Oh please put me down again

I know you lost a bet
G'head and catch your breath
But when the worst relents
You learn to live on less
You duck some, you take some square
Your luck runs out, you're there in midair
And when the big one comes
You'll know by the snare roll
You can be too careful
Ignore all the scarecrows
Time flys like the crow does
No regard for the grid
I can't ask you to show love
But would it kill you if you did

Nobody fears the height, you all just fear the fall
Go to the edge sometime
And prove your body wrong
You land badly, but you crash standing
You land badly, but you crash

  • Thanks to all those who've taken the time to check out the music. All things considered, a remarkably civil discussion for Youtube. Just a heads up: I'll be releasing a record in which this song, along with many others, is stripped back and reinterpreted by a live players: stand-up bass, guitar, drums, and voice. Hope you'll give it a listen this fall.

  • Great song, & favorite verse of 2010 "Nobody fears the height, you all just fear the fall, go to the edge sometime and prove your body wrong"

  • Shorty is too fine!! Mad skill too :)

  • that song is INCREDIBLE

  • @dessadarling just want to say i think your genuinely fantastic...vocal talent along with thought provoking lyrics...what you and the likes of P.O.S. are doing is my definition of what music should be. we unfortunately dont get alot of this sort of thing in ireland but alot of respect

  • Hahaha, I thought that this was a music video and she was just standing right now. And I was thinking "This is kinda weird, is she gonna move?" Hahah. Then I realized it was just a picture. Dessa = <3

  • @smskarlett Agreed. <3

  • @cassdawg420 I hear ya. I think it's the production, a little too much. She doesn't need the loudness, her lyrics are nice they need to tone down the beat a bit to put more emphasis on her voice.

  • You learn to live on less <3

  • @cassdawg420 you lucky dog

  • @dmaccballer A friend brough up Dessa just over a month ago and I thought I had never heard her before. I guess this song never left an impression. After listening to her album a 100 times through, The Crow isnt in my top 3 favs still. But she is truly amazing and I have fallen in love with her voice. I'm going to see her live in April and cant wait to see her :)
