Chicago's Mayor Daley Works the Crowd

After a campaign rally at Grant Memorial Church at 40th and Drexel, Mayor Richard M. Daley greets voters.

He's truly the Teflon Mayor. The CTA is a trainwreck, most of the south side is still a retail desert, kids are getting up at 5 a.m. to take three buses to get to a quality public school, and one of his aldermanic appointees is being investigated by the Feds for shaking down a developer to change the zoning on a parcel of vacant land that wasn't even in her ward.

In addition, he waited way too late to jump into the Big-Box debate.

Still, the garbage gets picked up every week, and the New Year's Eve fireworks and lightshow went off without a hitch. He's a lock for a sixth term.

In the milling crowd, you Chicago political junkies will recognize Father Michael Pfleger, County Board President Todd Stroger, former alderman and now radio host Cliff Kelley, State Rep. Esther Golar (a good friend), and Alderman Madeleine Haithcock, in whose ward this church is located.
