Before invading Poland, Germany signed the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, securing the eastern border of Germany. Limited trade, mostly on the part of the Russians, was part of the agreement. But everyone involved knew that it was a measure on both sides to buy time. Ideologically, both nations despised the other. Hitler had devoted much of Mein Kampf to his believe in the menace of Communism. Nazism was against everything Communism stood for.

Part of the operational planning of the German high command involved a possible invasion of the Soviet Union. On July 21, a month after the fall of France, Hitler summoned Generalfeldmarshal Walther von Brauchitsch and instructed him to plan for an invasion of the Soviet Union

It is of course very easy to speak from the benefit of hindsight but the first winter ought to have been a warning. As the front line extended itself advantage goes to the side which is the most mobile and has the most resources. As had already been shown the previous winter, on both scores the advantage lay with the USSR.

Clearly Hitler was not up to seeing that.

@alanheath3 Well looking at the situation, especially with initial success I'd of though victory was already decieded, obviously it was not.

However many twists of fate gave the Russians a major advantage that they may not have recieved otherwise, along with the massive opposing ideologies and unlike many other governments the soviet unwillingness to capitulate meantt that the Germans only chance of winning their Blitzkrieg failed.

Thats not to say it was never going to succeed.

@bobbylockes WRONG! the obamunist government is what is destroying this country from the inside. do you really think that having a government controlled and mandated health care system will work? just examine the postal service, are you totally satisfied with that service? what about the roads that you drive on a daily basis, are they good enough? the answer to this is allow the free market to work and allow people to CHOOSE. the government provides NO CHOICE!
