Great response to Nyk. I agree with all of your points.
The toughest one was the energy source argument, that one I could never get past.
Otherwise, the movie is a classic. I loved it when it first came out, although now I can't really watch it because it seems too cheesey. The end of the trilogy kinda ruined it for me. I could kinda ignore the religious overtones in the first two, but the last one layed it one so thick it was just sickening. Still it's a great trilogy worth watching.

Yes, it would seem using some other animal like cats, dogs, or mice would make far better batteries for the machines to use. Not to mention fossil fuels, nuclear, geo-thermal, et cetera would make far better sources of energy then using the heat given off by animals. Still, I guess some plot device had to be used for why the machines would bother keeping humanity around at all and to create the matrix for it.
Yes... the ending of the third movie was crap.

Because of all this I am currently re-watching the Matrix movies. Just remembered a wish I had about movie 2 or 3 before I saw them. I was hoping the real reason the machines kept humanity alive would be reveled as they wanted to have access to human creativity. This would have fit in nicely with the love of human culture that the machine the French Man had. This would have taken care of the nonsense of the machines needing humanity as a source of energy.

Hmmm... or if not human creativity then humans were left alive because the machines wanted to keep humanity alive to have access to human emotions. Again this would have fit in nicely with the character of the French Man and his wife.
