We asked members of Historic Royal Palaces staff which of Henry VIII's wives as the best. Here, Yeoman Warder Alan Fiddes states the case for Anne Boleyn - who bewitched Henry, caused the creation of a new religion and became the first queen of England to be executed - having been fitted up and framed and explains why she still holds a personal place in the heart of the nation.

Next year Hampton Court Palace will be home to rarely seen 16th-century portraits of each of the women in Henry VIII's life mother, sisters daughters and wives - and will be joined by evocative objects intimately connected to their fate.

  • @sezums She didn't put up with the Kings affairs. She was actually very vocal about them, and made it clear that she wouldn't just roll over like Catherine did.

  • i feel sorry for Katherine of Aragon but i like Queen Anne also...and the other queens. There is something special about Anne though :)

  • because well I know that all people in Britian are Church of England. But she made a difference in History. She gave England one of it's best Queens. Elizabeth the 1st. Also in her own way she helped to shape the nation of Britian. She showed that women could be just as strong as men. She was wrongfully accudsed and went her death bravely. I just hope that one day she can be buried in way in which to honor a Queen of England.

  • Her Majesty Queen Anne is one of my favorite histoical figuers. Ever since I first learned about King Henry the 8th in my world history class back in high school I grew curiouse about him. So I did my resurch and found out more. But when I read about each Queen. Anne stud to me among all the others. Knowning what it was like to be different to people at court b/c she was English but yet had not been rised there. My point is that Queen Anne never be forgotten for wat she did. I can't say Country

  • Actually her father was the one who sentenced her to death including her uncle.

  • She gave birth to two stillborns and put up with the Kings affairs. She didn't deserve death, especially angered by the release of her father who walked away scott free. Her death was a set up, she was framed. It's so very sad, that such a life was wasted :-( and yet she produced what I believe was the best Queen of England. The king was very selfish, although I admire his achievement- poor Catherine of Aragon was too tragically stripped and thrown away. She I truly admired. :-( very sad.

  • She was so influential in many ways and unarguably the most influential queen Henry had. She was about 29 at her execution. She I think was the most deserving of all the wives and she gave England the longest ruling sovereign... I admire her

  • I: Anne Boleyn was a strong, wise and very beautiful for those times woman, and she knew how to make a King fall in love with her, which was a rare fact for a simple woman of the court, and that is why people believed her to be a witch - thinking she put a spell on the King so he would love her and divorce Katherine of Aragon.

  • II: Rumours were also spread about Anne having six fingers on one of her hand, or having skin problem [being an evidence of her being a witch], but let's not forget that Kind Henry loved his mistresses to be beautiful in every way, so I don’t believe that he would fall in love with someone who had one finger in bonus to the others.

  • III: I think he loved Anne because she was different; she picked up a few good flirting techniques in France where women at court acted slightly different at the time and were freer than English women.
