Norris and Ross McWhirter, authors of the Guinness Book of World Records, appear on "I've Got a Secret" (November 15, 1965) with host Steve Allen and panelists Bill Cullen, Betsy Palmer, Henry Morgan, and Betsy Palmer, and demonstrate that, in addition to having compiled all the statistics in the book, they've also memorized them.

  • Different game. "What's My Line" originated in the US and was exported to the UK, but it co-existed (in the US) with "I've Got a Secret" for most of the the time the two shows were on the air.

The similarity is undeniable, and they were created and produced by the same company (Goodson-Todman Productions), but they were very different in style. WML had a genteel seriousness that IGAS lacked, but both were very entertaining and very popular in their day.

  • Steve's wearing a miner's helmet in the beginning because six days before that telecast, NYC (and indeed much of the northeastern US) had the great blackout of 1965 (Nov. 9 1965)....

  • Great upload! Fantastic how the brothers could remember all those facts and figures. Brilliant intelligent minds. I read that during WW2, they both served on different battleships and both ships suffered similar damage around the same time. Great upload!

  • @I85PIES me too, i was 11

  • In the UK this game show was called Whats My Line, they had to guess what a persons job was, not just a secret.

  • my cousins.

  • Great seeing this, I am Shaun McWhirter of Edinburgh Scotland -

  • This is fascinating. I remember Norris and Ross McWhirter of the record breakers show back in the seventies. I remember being shocked when Ross was assasinated by the IRA.

  • Thanks for posting. I had never heard before that they also knew everything in the book.
