Caspian was one of a litter of four kittens given to the pet store 11/21 to find homes for (the pet store does not buy kittens from anyone). He was thin when he came in, but as the days progressed he got thinner and thinner. We started feeding him soft food just to keep him hydrated. On November 28th, the owner of the store took him to the vet. They charged over $150 and said there was nothing wrong with the kitten. They sent some medicine and instructed to give him a .1 dose twice a day. If he was still sickly looking in two weeks, it was likely "fading kitten" disease, and he should be euthenized. The owner of the store gave him his first dose of the medicine at 5pm. When the store closed at 6pm, Caspian was face down in his litter box, seizing, a mouth full of kitty litter, unable to move.

I figured he wasn't going to make it, but I wanted to give him the best possible chance. I took him home with me. I tried to bottle feed him some water, I put some honey on his tongue, I wrapped him in a blanket, and I sat with him in front of the heater. I stayed with him until he drew his last breath at 8:10 pm. He died just over three hours after getting back from the veterinary clinic - the one that said there was nothing wrong with him. He had a strong heart, clear breathing, no parasites, FIV/FeLeuk negative, and he tested clean of all of the diseases and such they tested him for. So why did he die? I don't know.

I'm posting this video in memory of Caspian. I adored him for the week he was at the pet store. My thanks go to the owner of the store for taking him to the vet and spending money on him. So many other pet store owners wouldn't have bothered.

  • its because cats from the pet store normally come from animal farms--

how they breed lots of chickens in one cramped space, they also do with cats and dogs--

:( so sad, casper's such a pretty kitty too

    R.I.P

  • Like I said in the video info (to the right of the video), this pet store does not order kittens from kitten mills. They take in local unwanted litters from people who don't want to have to bring them to the shelter (that kills nearly 99% of the felines that come in). They make the owners bring the kittens to a veterinarian for an exam before they can bring the kittens in. The store then gives the vaccinations, dewormer and Frontline before selling them.

  • The pet store does not pay for any of the kittens it takes in. The owners are required to pay for a vet check to at least give them some responsibility for the unwanted kittens they bring into the world.

Most pet stores however, I would agree have sick animals because they buy from large scale commercial breeders and the animals change hands several times from breeder to broker to distributor to pet store before heading to a new home. That is not the case with Caspian though.

  • If your kitten is lethargic take him to the vet stat cause with a low blood sugar they can die quick. Or give him karo syrup but, a vet is best for body temp reasons.

  • This kitten was taken to the veterinarian, and they tested him for everything. He was perfectly healthy. He died from "fading kitten disease." He did not have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or they'd have been able to save him.
