An interview I did 10 days after Jerry's "comeback" gig at The Stone after his coma in 1986. This was Jerry's first interview after the coma...This was done upstairs at the Grateful Dead Ticket Sales office in front of "The Wall" of envelopes...at the end of the interview, Jerry makes some comments on the envelopes...this is a copy of a copy because somehow I have lost the master :-( David Gans is running the video camera...The audio was dubbed from David's audio master....that's a long story! Thank you David for this copy!

  • @srnickvelluzzi Here Comes Sunshine was brought back for the first time since February of 1974 at Compton Terrace on 12/6/92...and that was David Gans correcting Jerry on the number of times it was performed.

@ChrisGiarratano, I don't have access to either the Phil or Bobby interviews...

  • This interview was done 25 years ago today!

  • @smarcus1031 Amazing. Thanks for posting it. And thank you also for selling me a ticket to the BCT show in... 1987? (The year they did 6 shows in a row around Halloween) It was my first time in CA. I flew in from Maine and met 2 or 3 guys from MA the day before the show. I got there a day early by mistake (had the wrong dates). If it was 1987 then I was 22. You stopped by in your Beetle(?) and introduced yourself. That was cool. A memory I won't ever forget....

  • @MayorMichaelShell those six shows were in 1984: October 27,28,30,31 and November 2 and 3rd.(The first tapers sections were at these shows.) There were four shows there in 1985 and 1986.

    I've never owned a VW. From 1983-2011 I have only driven Honda's...

  • @hickeytom1, when Jerry was basically "clean" he was a real pleasure to be around, but Jerry WAS a human being and he had a lot of the problems that you and I have...he could be "mean" but it wasn't in public. He had a hard time with confrontation, and frequently would say "yes" to some one and leave it to his management/crew to make it clear that Jerry meant "no."

  • @hickeytom1, I loved the Frankenstein one too! I had a couple of nice conversations with Jerry at my desk about movies and especially Laser Discs (remember those?) He called them "Eye Candy"

  • We had "engaged" in some herbage before this interview...can you tell?

  • 15:25 Terrific to see that Bob & Phil were hip to making the Dead a much more improvisational unit even back then. Too bad they didn't have the gravitas to make it happen. A quick "whatever" from Garcia sealed the deal of keeping the status quo. I wonder why Garcia - a forward thinker musically - was adverse from mixing things up?

  • @smarcus1031 That is interesting to hear. Living in Japan, I see lots of similarities between Jerry and the Japanese. The Japanese avoid conflict and confrontation at all costs.

  • @smarcus1031 Steve - Thank you for the response and the clarification. I apologize for the foggy memory. I do clearly remember you telling us that the extra tickets you sold us, at cost, were from the Dead members themselves. You told us that each member was allocated a certain number and these were extra that they didn't give away. The memory of the Beetle, I now realize, was from the time I met Dennis McNally at the Greek Theatre just after he became the publicist. It all rolls into one...

  • @smarcus1031 Sounds like how life works here in Japan! I've only been here a year and have a hard understanding how hard it is for folks to say no is. Perhaps, Jerry was from Japan in a past life!

  • @TheSfwatcher yeak, not sure what he said either? American beauty perhaps?

  • thank you for posting this!

  • check out Jerry's eyes shooting off to the left when he says that his drug experiences have been mostly positive. we all know what that's a sign of. sad what heroin and cocaine can do to such a great man...just saying.
