My father sailed on HMS Diomede Canada in May 1940 with HMS Rodney he told me one morning he awoke and went up on deck, Churchill had ordered the Royal Navy to put a ring of steel around Britain. All he could see from horizon to horizon was war ships and troop ships sailing towards Britain he always said that Hitler would have never have got across the Channel, half way across Diomede left the convoy to confront the French fleet on the island in the West indies Martinique. He is 92 still OK

Think Diomede was a WW1 cruiser? an example of the previous C class HMS Caroline still exists at Belfast, only ship afloat that fought at Jutland.

Hood was designed in 1916 Bismarck in 1936.Rodney and Nelson were designed in 1922.Bismarck lasted 6 months,Hood 21 years.Hood sunk a BB and fatally damaged a BC.Rodney 22 years and Nelson 23 years all 3 fought off air attacks that made 15 Swordfish look like a walk in the park.

How this guy got over a million channel views from a load of pictures set to music is beyond me.

Exactly, point blank range. So close the shells bounced off the water and upwards as the angle was so small so holing her beneath the water line was impossible. That and her armoured citadel was meant for close range action. She really wasn't that strong at long ranges. I like the fact you mention Jutland, as none of what you mentioned relates to that. British flash protection/procedures and shells that had a tendancy to detonate before penetration are the main culprits.

River Platte? one could say that was not a capital ship. More to the point, the Germans ran because they had to. War is not about a fair fight, its about winning, and the RN was better at that than the Nazi navy.

I have been interested in these two ships ever since I first saw a picture of HMS Rodney. They're the most interesting looking battleships ever built.

My mistake. I was confused by the D-class being Emergency War Program ships, but you're correct, most were built too late for WW1.

Its not just tragic but a travesty that some of our greatest Battleships were not kept as museum ships for future generations to admire.

For a nation that put one of this worlds greatest navy's on the worlds ocean we could have also put one of the worlds best floating museum's in scapa flow that would have had peoples of the world flocking to.

Battle of the Barents Sea. 1 pocket battleship,1 Heavy cruiser,6 Destroyers attempted to intercept convoy JW51B.

RN 6 small old Destroyers and 2 light cruisers after 2.5 hours.

Also look up the Duel of Stromvier HMS Renown V Scharnhorst and Gneisenau.Renown was completed in 1917.

Also HMS Ramilles a 1916 battleship. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau ran away.

So could you give an example of a unit on unit action?
