If everyone back then kept thinking it is a bad idea to leave the caves and try to ration all the food, we would all be still stuck in our caves. People thought it was a bad idea and a waste of time and money for explorers to set sail out to the ocean because they thought the explorers would fall off the edge. Luckily, some of us are naturally curious and driven to explore and unlock the secrets of the universe, and if it only cost me half a penny, I'm convinced. Raise it to a penny!

@sylviabombs15 I did think about that and it's in my original comment. What we would have is probably Teflon, Velcro, etc... and $19,000,000,000/yr. in the bank. Sounds better to me. BTW Google "Teflon Toxicity".

@jcaliss I agree with you, but just think, if we listened to you, we wouldn't have any non stick frying pans.
Then how would I make my grilled cheese sandwiches?!?!?!?
didn't think about that did you??

Half a cent (BTW Neil rounded down...) of each tax dollar is about $20,000,000,000. I don't buy the argument that the "side effects" of space exploration are worth the investment. Think of how much more benefit we would have if the money were dedicated directly to solving the Earth's problems. Space is "cool and interesting" but it's a luxurious expense. Basically it's people having fun and trying things out to see what happens to satisfy their curiosity at the expense of the taxpayer.
Is it possible can we have a decent discussion here without flames and rude remarks?
