Mercutio & Tybalt's death scenes.
(Sorry if parts of the monologue don't match well with the video.)
Script -

Romeo: Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee Doth much excuse the appertaining rage To such a greeting: villain am I none, Therefore farewell. I see thou knowest me not.

Tybalt: Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries That thou hast done me!
Tybalt: (cont.) (yelling) Turn and draw.

Romeo: I never injured thee, And so, good Capulet, which name I tender As dearly as mine own...
Romeo: (cont.) ...be satisfied.

Mercutio: O calm, dishonourable, vile submission!
Mercutio: (cont.) Tybalt, you ratcatcher, Will you walk?

Tybalt: What wouldst thou have with me?

Mercutio: Good King of Cats, nothing but one of your nine lives.

Tybalt: I am for you.

Benvolio: Art thou hurt?

Mercutio: Ay, ay, a scratch. A scratch!

Romeo: Courage, man. The hurt cannot be much.

Mercutio: 'Twill serve. Ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man.
Mercutio: (cont.) A plague o' both your houses They have made worms' meat of me. (a silent whisper) A plague o' both your houses!
Mercutio: (cont.) Why the devil came you between us? I was hurt under your arm.
Romeo: I thought all for the best.

-Next scene-
Romeo: Mercutio's soul Is but a little way above our heads,
Romeo: (cont.) Staying for thine to keep him company.

Tybalt: Thou, wretched boy, shalt with him hence.

Romeo: (with frightening intensity) Either thou or I, or both, must go with him. Either thou or I, or both, must go with him!
-End-

  • I never understood why Tybalt looked so concerned for Mercutio. He just got beaten up by him (perhaps almost killed if it wasn't for Romeo intervening) so I don't know why he'd be sad to see him hurt. I thought perhaps he might have been worried he'd be in trouble for the death, but wouldn't he have gotten in the same amount as trouble for killing Romeo (I'm assuming he was asking Romeo to duel with him the scene before this?) Or am I just missing something here?

  • John leguizamo is the BEST tybalt,

tybalt never wanted to kill mercutio, it was some what an accident.

  • @poppypineapple1991 hey it was because Tybalt had released his anger and he probably realized the final cost, as well as knowing Mercutio for a very long time since childhood most likely, he never intended to hurt Mercutio....however Mercutio prefered the company of Romeo who was usually very mild in temperment.Mercutio's family background was not involved between the family fueds..hope this helps....

  • @GoldDove77 I was wondering the same thing.

  • I really love the actor of Mercutio.

  • kicked fus roh dah! 1:26 :P Romeo got beated down by Tybalt

  • @SuperBalletgirl101 I agree on your interpretation of this scene, My take is Tybalt attacked Romeo out of Spite by trying to restore the Capulets honor. Mercuito intervened because Romeo wasn't back & wanted to be civil seeing as he loved Juliet her family was his family in a sense.Tybalt killed Mercuito he knew it was a death sentence for him as the Prince said punishment was punishable by death for disturbing the streets.Tybalts intentions was to scare Romeo not kill him

  • @poppypineapple1991 The thing is, Mercutio wasn't a Montague. He wasn't hated by the Capulet's like Romeo was. Mercutio was even invited to the party. I've always interpreted this scene to be a playful duel between them (Though this is not this director's interpretation). Mercutio wouldn't have died if Romeo hadn't gotten in the way. Tybalt wasn't trying to kill Mercutio, so he is obviously astounded that he did. Mercutio is also related to the Prince, which would make things harder.

  • @zoth7 Oh that kind of makes sense. Like when he shot one of the Montagues at the beginning in the gas station, he shot to wound not to kill? Thanks anyway :-)

Tybalt's a macho and a show off: He likely intended to defeat and humiliate Romeo, but not to kill anyone. Remember, he's young and stupid. (A lot younger than Leguizamo really, a gorgeous Tybalt though he was). In the original context, duels were quite often supposed to be fought till first blood not till death - but of course this would often go wrong and so it does. Also, Mercutio's a kinsman of the prince so there goes any chance of leniency.

  • and again... the black guy always dies
