A visit to Wong Hee Heng's pond this morning. He was measuring and taking photos of several smaller koi for the upcoming Malaysian Mini Koi Show. Wong is the Secretary of ZNA Malaysia Koi Club. His pond is 42 tons.
i have noticed that you and your expert koi keeper friends do not have any aquatic plants in your ponds. what is the thinking on that? also, what is the media inside the bakki shower? thanks
Wong has bacteria house in his bakki shower. My own bakki shower has bio balls and J-mats in it. You won't find plants in the ponds of most serious koi hobbyists. They can bring parasites and disease, and their effect on nitrates is negligible and nothing that regular water change cannot achieve. 99% of ponders are water gardeners though, and all 99% would disagree on this point.
thanks for your reply. we have a small amateur pond, so i am fascinated by your videos. those can't disagree, but i bet you don't have jumbos like you guys do:) how long does uv bulb last,,my pond turns green quite easy even with uv light. i really need to think about a more serious filter, though. shame, shame:)
Exactly it. The hobbyist has to decide what he or she wants from the hobby, whether the focus is on the water feature as a whole or on the koi in particular. The approach would be different in each case. It is advisable to change UV lights every year especially if water turns green, since they can lose effectiveness even though they still light up. Also, submersible ones (or those in tubes through which water passes) are more effective than overhead ones.
No, the pond is actually painted with blue epoxy. A little of it has chipped off. The green you see is algae. I believe the best colour is BLACK which is what I used for my own pond. Seeing koi against a black background when the water is very clear gives a very ethereal feeling.
