People choose to ignore it because they won't believe somebody they like does that to people. "She's lying for attention, he's a nice guy." "I've known him for years." "Women can't hit that hard."

It's one thing to notice it. It's another thing to put aside your feelings and comfort, regardless of whether you like the abused person, and cut off ties with the abuser.
