One thing I noticed is that this game didn't give out many chances for extra lives or chaos emeralds. Sonic 2 handed them out like candy on Hallowe'en.

@MrInitialMan I think what it is is in Sonic 2, the ring post is where you get your chances at the Emeralds, and in Sonic 3 you have that gumball like deal.

Absolutely right. You have to look for the special stages in Sonic 3. I've gotten all 7 emeralds before the end of the first act--which made playing the rest of the game a pain in the ass.
